Teaching Your Children Healthy Teeth Care

It is very important for you to keep your teeth clean. Research is beginning to show a link between poor oral care and strokes and heart health. This news is scary when you realize that there is more to risk than just a cavity or a root canal. With your life at stake it is important to teach your kids at a young age to properly care for their teeth.

Length of time for brushing their teeth is one of the first things you can teach them. Dentists are recommending that you brush for two minutes. This may seem like a long amount of time for a child, who left on their own will come up quite short. An egg timer may be a good way to start getting them to brush longer. There are two minute timers that stick right to your bathroom mirror for just this reason.

My kids are also horrible about brushing their teeth with regular toothbrushes. Also they were not getting the plaque off their teeth very well. We decided to go with a mechanical toothbrush to help aid in this. Not only did it help the kids teeth, but they were super excited to use an electronic toothbrush.

Another trick we used was to get each kid their own toothpaste. You can range from a bubble gum which has fluoride for older children, to a strawberries that is fluoride free for younger ones.

You can also use this trick for mouthwash. It seems the stranger the color and flavor the more likely they are to use it. Once your children get a little older, it is very important to teach them how to get between their teeth with dental floss or water pick. Kids sometimes seem to like using a water pick because they can play with the water as well.

Getting into a good routine with your child and monitoring them is ultimately the best way to promote good hygiene until they are old enough to understand.

A Fun Fact...
