Is An Eel A Good Pet For Me?

Although fish are fun and lovely, they can also be quite a bit of work – after all, you have to feed them several times a day, and you have to be radical about looking after their water; a nice alternative for that fish tank, on the other hand, is an eel. Unlike fish, eels only need to be fed once every few days, and they are certainly more hardy than many fish, which makes them an excellent, low-maintenance option. But just because eels look cool and are easy to take care of does not necessarily mean that they are a good pet for you specifically.

One thing to keep in mind regarding eels is the difficulty that comes with the task of cleaning out their tank every few weeks. Eels have a great sense of smell to make up for their poor eyesight, and they also can sense movement really well; this means that you risk attack every time you clean their tank! If you perhaps have children you are wanting to get an “easy” pet for, think twice before giving them too much responsibility with an eel. Depending on the variety you get, cleaning your eel’s tank might just end up being the last thing one of your fingers ever do!

Eels are also expert escape artists, which is another consideration to keep in the front of your mind when you are thinking of purchasing an eel. You might provide them with the best home they could possibly hope for, and they will still try to find a way out and onto the floor! If you have a curious cat in your house, they will probably be trying to find a way to get their paws into the tank even as the eel looks for a way out; this means that, even with a tank that is held securely in place, it might not remain securely in place permanently, depending on what your other pets are like.

An eel can be a fun, elegant addition to your home if you take the time to learn proper cleaning techniques. But if you have children who want a pet to take care of, or if you have other pets who are constantly curious, fish might just be a better option for you! After all, it might be work to feed your fish all the time and keep a close eye on their water, but this is nothing compared to the work of finding an eel on your kitchen floor!

A Fun Fact...
