Preparing Your Lawn For The Winter

There will be plenty of things to be aware of and to keep in mind when you own a house, and sometimes, it can be easy to get to a point where thinking about preparing your lawn for the winter is the last thing on your mind. But there are a few things you will need to make sure you are doing now if you want your lawn to still be beautiful next spring and summer – and you will need to make sure you are doing these things at the right time as well!

The first thing for you to realize is that the last mow and trim of the year should come when the grass has slowed down its rate of growth, but before it stops growing altogether; if your grass is too low heading into the winter, you will increase the likelihood of the ground succumbing to frostbite, so give your lawn that last trim at a time when it still has a bit of growing left to do, as this will leave your grass at a good length for the winter.

You will also want to use autumn to lay your grass seed for the next spring, but timing will be critical here; you will want to lay the seed after you have given the lawn the last mow, so that you are not mowing up all the seeds, but you will also want to get the seed down before the leaves start to fall heavily – otherwise, the seed may all end up sitting on top of the leaves instead of nestling down into the grass.

And once the leaves do begin to fall from the trees, you will need to rake them before the first serious frost hits (and especially before you get any significant snowfall), or you may end up with leaves that are stuck to your lawn throughout the duration of the winter!

It is not at all difficult to prepare your lawn for the winter – you simply need to make sure you know the steps you are supposed to take, and also make sure you know the proper order and timing of these steps!
